Two of the leading commercial real estate firms in the Charlotte area, Merrifield Partners and Bissell Patrick, will merge operations. The new entity will be called Merrifield Patrick, LLC. The combined firm will continue to provide development, brokerage, property management and investment services for commercial real estate in the Charlotte region.
“This merger will allow us to expand our services to our clients and partners” stated Jim Merrifield, Managing Partner of Merrifield Partners. Bailey Patrick added “Jim and I have worked closely for many years and are partners in a number of projects. By teaming with his organization, our current brokerage operation will greatly benefit from the expanded full-service platform.”
The combined company will have eleven real estate professionals actively engaged in brokerage, development and property management. An additional seven employees will be providing administrative and accounting support. The combined firm will select and relocate to new facilities during early 2010.

Operating as Crosland Commercial for twenty years and since 2004 as Merrifield Partners the firm has developed over 4,000 acres of land and 3.5 million square feet of office, industrial and commercial property, primarily in the Charlotte region. Merrifield Partners is best known for its mixed-use developments in the Charlotte area including: Charlotte School of Law at Bryant Park; Whitehall in southwest Charlotte; NorthCross in Huntersville; Blakeney Professional Center in south Charlotte; 521 Corporate Center and Bailes Ridge Corporate Park in Lancaster County; and Old Hickory Business Park in Union County. Bissell Patrick, LLC was formed in 1997 as an affiliate of The Bissell Companies, Inc. by H.C. “Smoky” Bissell, Edward L. Curran and Bailey W. Patrick, with Bissell as Chairman and Patrick as President. The Company’s focus from the start has been on providing third party commercial real estate brokerage services for land, office and industrial properties while also pursuing investment and joint venture development opportunities. Bissell Patrick has brokered sites for numerous large developments such as Sun City at Carolina Lakes by Pulte-Del Webb, Springfield in Fort Mill by Crescent Resources, McCullough in Pineville by John Wieland Homes and Stone Creek Ranch off Tom Short Road by Centex Homes. Patrick, a long-time active member of the Charlotte commercial real estate community, has been named the annual “Top Producing Land Broker” in the greater Charlotte Region 12 times.
At the close of 2008 given his continuing focus on the successful development of Ballantyne Corporate Park, Bissell decided to exit the real estate brokerage business in Charlotte and subsequently sold his interest in the residential firm Bissell-Hayes to Baxter Hayes. Likewise, Bissell, Curran, and later Partner, Greg Cox sold their interest in Bissell Patrick to Patrick. In reflecting on the change Bailey commented, “Smoky Bissell has truly been a wonderful mentor and role model for me in my career and I will always be thankful for my 25-year association with the Bissell organization”. Bissell stated, “Bailey and I have had a great run together. He is a close friend and was a valuable member of our leadership team at Bissell for many years.
